Halloween 2006
Last year I touched on what I think about this time of year. Click here to read it. But I think it’s even more so on my heart this year. After hearing the message at church last week (BVG – Click on August 29th 2006) it really made me think about just how bad we would be if it were not for the Law and the the laws of the state. Look at what most people dress up as. This year the most popular costumes for guys are Pirates and Pimps. That tells you right there that the two most interesting lifestyles to mimic for the night are the lives of a thief and a womanizer. Girls on the other hand try to out do each other by wearing a costume with a shorter skirt, show off more skin to get attention. I think Halloween offers a great look into the real heart of each and every one of us. Men dress up like Pimps and Women dress up like hoes because it’s halloween. It’s ok to dress up like somebody you are not, or are? I think that on the inside we have tons of pimps and hoes that wish they could act like that all the time. If there was no such thing as indecent exposure would we wear these costumes daily? If we did not have to worry about someone thinking less of us because the “law” told us it’s not right how would we act? I’ll tell you how I would act. If I did not know better I would be all over the place. A pimp, a pirate… Why not be both and still get my hoes because they don’t know better either. In my opinion halloween is just another excuse for us to step outside of our existance and act in a way we normally could not for fear of rejection.
I went to a frields costume party for a few minutes on Saturday night and there was not one decently dressed female in the whole place. Unless one was hiding outside I did not see one. From little french maide outfits to the most desturbing Dorthy outfit from the Wizard of Oz I have ever seen I thought to myself. It’s a shame that these girls are not getting praised for their personalities and other non physical aspects tonight. I never saw a guy walk up to one of these girls and say, “hey, tell me about yourself.” It was more like the guy was the dog and the girl was the bunny in the movie “Click.”
It’s sad and no wonder why girls give themselves away outside of relationships and seek for a sense of comfort in a man rather then in herself. How many women do you know that are completly comfortable with themselves or men for that matter? We are all subject to a lack of self esteem and we all believe we can find it living out another lifestyle not of our own. Here in Modesto it’s just that much worse because there really is not that much to do. I mean you can keep youself entertained every now and then but when it comes down to it there really is not much to keep your mind off self loathing. Do you hate yourself? Sometimes I do, and what do we do when we see someone who truely looks happy? We dispise them. We make up reasons in our head to dislike them. We are truely hateful people on the inside. On the outside we are civil for the most part.
Back to my main point. Halloween is not all bad. I think it’s awesome to trick-or-treat as a kid. Dress up as a super hero and go door to door seeking candy. That is an American tradition and something I think all kids should get to do. But as we grow up I still think there is nothing wrong with dressing up as super heros and a princess for a costume party as long as it does not turn into a display of who has the plushest pimp costume or the shortest skirt. Since when did a simple fun childhood experience turn into an oportunity to out degrade each other? If all the girls at that costume party were morally dressed characters I would not have anything to gripe about, it would actually have been fun for me to be there. But at some point we traded in our childhood for another chance to get attention from others. Our everlonging desire to be noticed.
This year please think about what you are dressing up as and what your costume will speak to others about you.
